The monastery was founded on 21 November 1347 by the Emperor, Charles IV, and was a centre of art and learning for many centuries. It is here that the Glagolitic section of the famous Reims Gospel originated, on which French kings swore their oaths until 1782. The ambit is decorated with Gothic paintings dating from around 1360. They are strangely well preserved and are some of the rarest Gothic paintings in Central Europe. The church is also unique for the reconstruction of its tower, which was destroyed at the end of the Second World War. AddressPraha 2, Vyšehradská 49 |
